How to make a successful digital download with these 3 tips from marketing and product professionals
Whether it’s your first digital download, or you’ve been selling for a while, here are three tips from our Associate Director of Marketing, Sarah and Senior Group Product Manager, Stacey on how to make a digital download that turns your social audience into happy customers.
Tip #1: Start with the problem
Your audience might love your work, and interact with your content, but they will only part with their money for something that serves them in some way.
With every digital download you create, try to solve one specific problem. What are the roadblocks your target buyer might face? How can your product help to resolve that? Put yourself in their shoes (or better yet, ask them). With this understanding, you’ll be able to create a digital product that’s incredibly valuable (and much easier to market).
Here’s an example:
Problem:
Rebecca’s tired of coming home from work and spending 1-2 hours in the kitchen making dinner and cleaning up. She lives by herself, so she always ends up making too much and eating the same thing for 3 days straight.
Solution:
An e-book on healthy, quick one-pot meals for weeknights.
Tip #2: Keep it short and sweet
You want to provide your audience with great value for their money, but that doesn’t mean you need to create massive e-books or complex courses. Instead, focus on producing smaller, highly digestible products.
It’s not about how much content you include—it’s about the quality and relevance of the information you provide. A well-designed checklist, a detailed step-by-step guide, or a one-page recipe can be incredibly valuable when it comes from someone with expertise and experience. So have confidence in what you know and deliver it concisely.
From a business perspective, giving away all your knowledge in one product isn’t always the best strategy. Instead, consider breaking your knowledge into multiple digital downloads. Not only does this allow you to create a more focused and high-quality product, but it also increases your chances of earning more.
Tip #3: Rinse and repeat
Don’t stop at just one digital product—turn your idea into a series. This allows you to repurpose previous content, making it easier to scale your digital downloads and upsell additional products to existing customers.
Some ideas for a digital product series could be:
Recipe collections for different seasons (spring, summer, fall, winter)
Skincare guides for different skin types or concerns (e.g. dry, oily, acne-prone, sensitive)
Photography presets tailored for different lighting conditions (golden hour, nighttime, underwater, etc.)
Workout plans for different fitness levels or goals (beginner, weight loss, muscle gain, flexibility)
