How I made my first $5K of passive income from one digital product

Sarah Hart is a food content creator who has built her following on useful batch cooking tips and freezer meal recipes. With Digital Downloads from Bio Sites, she launched her first digital product—a freezer meal guide for people living on their own (or one other person)—turning one PDF into a stream of passive income.

Hey Sarah, how did you get into what you do now?

I’ve always loved to cook, but wasn’t sure how to turn that passion into income. Being a content creator felt like a far away dream that I had missed the boat on. I own a small business making and selling candles and other home fragrance products, so creating marketing content and social media for that brand has been my job for over 12 years now. But when I started sharing videos on my personal page about cooking and freezer meals, that’s when everything changed.

Where did the idea for your freezer meal guide come from?

I saw a finance creator I follow selling a budgeting template, and realized I could turn the educational content I create for free into a similar revenue stream.

In your opinion, what makes a good digital product vs a bad digital product?

I think a good digital product is something that you feel delivers on the promise and is a good value. There’s nothing worse than buying a digital product and feeling like you already knew all the information in the product and it doesn’t help solve your problem.

What made you decide on the price point for your freezer meal guide?

I wanted to make it as accessible as possible, so that when you land on the page and see the price, it’s a no-brainer. As little friction to the price as possible. I priced it at just under $10.

What was your biggest challenge?

I wasn’t sure what the right delivery mechanism would be, I didn’t think I wanted to set up a whole ecommerce site just for this one digital product, but I also didn’t want to create too many steps that would frustrate customers. So when I realized that I could sell the product directly through my Bio Site, it was perfect for me.

How do you promote your freezer meal guide to your audience?

Before launch, I involved my audience in the creation of the guide. I ran polls in my IG stories about what I should name it, and asked them what they wanted to see in the FAQ section.

Once the guide was launched I shared it in my stories with a link to my Bio Site. Since then I’ve promoted it through my content and I use comment automation for the guide.

It’s so nice to have something to point people towards as a starting point for my content. Just like “Hey, if you just found my page, and hundreds of videos, and you think this method could be helpful for you, I created a 30-page guide on how to get started.”

What advice would you give to other food creators who want to get into selling digital products?

Your audience is probably already telling you what they would want a digital product about, you just need to listen. What is the question you get asked about most? What content performs the best? Run with that and don’t be afraid to charge for it.
